Not your typical holiday movie

We saw our first Christmas movie of the season.

Last night we rented A Merry Friggin Christmas .  (affiliate link)  There is only one person I'm a fan of in that movie and its no surprise to any of you that have been reading for at least a few months, that person is Robin Williams.

I wanted to make sure I saw all of his final films and even though I'm not a fan of the whole cynical Christmas movie genre, I made an exception for him.  The general vibe is an idiot brother decides to have a christening on Christmas Eve and makes Boyd (Joel McHale) the godfather...meaning he has to spend the holiday with his estranged father (Williams).  Boyd realizes when they get ready for bed that they've left all of their son's Christmas gifts back in Chicago.  Holiday hijinks and family bonding ensue.

It's unrated but not necessarily for the kiddies.  We're not talking Bad Santa (affiliate link)  bad and nothing worse than they'd probably hear on cable but still not for little ones.  Especially since it brings up that messy subject of whether or not a man in a big red suit exists.  (We all know he does, I mean DUH but you know how cynical kids are these days.)

I think the 'meat' of the movie was missing.  It seemed like there should've been more to go through to get to the end result.  It was like expecting a big turkey dinner and only getting squirrel.  (You'll get the reference.)  I wish Robin didn't have an accent in the movie because I love his regular voice so much.  But you know how he is...was...he could convey so much in just a facial expression.  When he's sitting on the front porch in Chicago...ripped my heart out.  He's got a few interviews on the special features section too.  You'll get to hear Mrs. Doubtfire's voice for a few lines and the last line of his interview with Joel McHale is a little sad but worth the watch.  I must also mention that Candice Bergen gives a great performance.  She's such a cutie.

Is this the best holiday movie ever?  No and I don't think it was meant to be.  But if you're a Robin Williams fan, watch it.

Have you started watching any Christmas movies yet?  Do you plan to watch a specific one every year to kick things off or just happen to catch what's on TV?

  1. It was nice just seeing Robin in a movie and pretending for even an instant that he was still alive. Just as you said, if anyone is a Robin Williams fan then definitely a must see.

    1. Yes...that's exactly it. For people who are afraid to watch something with him in it for fear it will be too painful, in those moments he's still with us, making us laugh as he always has. No better way to honor him.

  2. I'll probably look for this one, just because he is in it. Otherwise, we always watch Charlie Brown Christmas and A Christmas Story and then catch whatever is on tv.

    1. Gotta love Charlie Brown Christmas! The first note of any song from the soundtrack of that and I get warm fuzzies!

  3. We watched a Hallmark channel that I had DVRd last night. It was hokey and you guessed the ending from the very beginning but I enjoyed it. As I write this, we are listening to Christmas music on Sirius on the road in son's new pickup. The Christmas season goes too fast--You need to start early!!

    1. I've had the music channel on this week too! Next weekend we're putting up our tree so that when Thanksgiving night rolls around all we have to do is throw the switch on the lights. If you have any snow in your area, send it east. I'm jealous!

  5. Naturally, A Charlie Brown Christmas is first on the list! A Christmas Story is a must for the hubs. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Christmas Vacation. And last but not least, if I can find it... The Little Drummer Boy. Haven't seen that one since I was a little kid. The hubs just piped up and said he wants to find Dutch as well, even though he thinks it's a Thanksgiving movie.

  6. I am TOTALLY renting this!!! My husband "hates" Christmas movies, but he loves Joel McHale, so he might bite on this one! Thanks for the suggestion!
